 Computer Applications at SEAS

Instructor:  Mrs. Carol Johnson

Computers have become an essential part of our everyday lives.  Proficiency in the software that assists us as productive, efficient people is critical.

At SEAS, we are using Microsoft Office Suite 2003.

Our targets are fun and engaging.  The lessons address the technology benchmarks for GTACS and the guidelines in technology of the state of Michigan.

The Quest http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/quest
This is a game after my own heart. In The Quest, you enter Cyberspace to stop a villain named Hacker. Your mentor, Motherboard, sends you on different quests to secure Cyberspace. The first quest has you defending Motherboard from Hacker's bugs. You have to collect parts around the city to upgrade her computer. Along the way you'll also encounter Hacker's henchmen, Buzz and Delete. You've just got to see it all for yourself. This game achieves the seemingly impossible task of making computer security fun. It also happens to have some simple math puzzles. It's all really well done with cartoon-like animation.

Food Force: www.food-force.com
Food Force was put together by the United Nations' World Food Program. It puts real meaning to the idea of fighting world hunger. Pilot a helicopter to find communities in need of food. Then pack the food and deliver it to the people. That includes driving the trucks and even piloting air drop missions.

The Art Zone:   www.nga.gov/kids/zone
The Art Zone has a handful of games sponsored by the National Gallery of Art. Some are mixed with information from the Gallery or from art history. Collage Machine lets you create a collage from over 100 unique pieces. It also offers information about Romare Bearden, an important American artist known for collages. The games get a bit more high-tech with Cubits. Cubits let you create your own 3-D sculpture from cubes. You can compare yours to the real sculpture that inspired the game. The site also offers other 3-D graphics games, as well as a traditional paint program.
