The SEAS Library Media Center is open from 7:50 a.m. to 3:30 pm most school days (because of meetings the library may occasionally be closed after school).Students come to the library every week during their Resource time as their Language Arts (LA) class.During this time, they are expected to read an Accelerated Reader book for LA, take care of check-out and check-in of library materials, pay fines and take AR quizzes.Teachers often schedule time in the library for students to do research for projects as well as send individual students on library passes.Students are welcome after school until 3:30.
Checking Out Materials
Books, music, CDs, and older encyclopedias may be checked out for two weeks and renewed a maximum of four times. Past issues of magazines and vertical file materials may be checked out for two weeks and renewed a maximum of two times. Students do not need to have items with them to renew. Holds may be placed on checked out items.
Reference items, new encyclopedias, new magazines, and reserved materials may only be checked out overnight. Overnight items may be checked out after 2:15 p.m. and are due back before 9:00 a.m. the next school day.
Audiovisual equipment may be checked out for one hour and may not be renewed. 25 cents per hour is charged for overdue AV equipment.
Videos and audio books may only be checked out with a note from the teacher responsible for the class the item represents. This is great for students who were absent and may have missed viewing that special video in class.
Old magazines for cut-up are in the last drawer of the Vertical File (VF) cabinets. No checkout is required for these items.
Overdue Items
The SEAS library charges five cents per school day until the item is returned or renewed. Excused absence days are not counted, but the student is responsible for letting the librarian know when she is calculating the fine. Five cents per school hour or twenty-five cents per school day is charged on overnight items.
If a student loses a book or magazine, they will be charged the price of the item.
Students will not receive their quarterly report cards until library obligations are taken care of.
Computer and Internet Usage
Computers are for school related work only. If a students does not have a computer or word processor at home, the parent may wish to arrange a special pass with the librarian in order for the student to word process homework on a regular basis. If a student is unable to print at home, a parent should write a note to the teacher explaining the problem and allowing the student to use a school computer. Students should obtain a yellow computer slip from their teacher to give the librarian or computer lab assistant. Students will be responsible for printing charges.
Students are encouraged to use the SEAS Library web page links as their starting place for research. Preselected sites are now on the Web Links for Students page. If a link ends up no longer being the site it should be, please let the librarian know. Databases at Michigan Electronic Library may be accessed from home by using a driver's license number. These are the same databases accessed at the public libraries.
